Written Answers. - Conservation Works.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

558 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the amount spent and the development which has taken place at Kells Priory, County Kilkenny since 1997; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8442/02]

During the period 1997 to 2001, the following works were undertaken at Kells Priory: urgent masonry repair and conservation of a collapsed arch in the south chancel wall; repair of a window; cleaning off and repair of the wall tops; masonry repairs to the Watergate and temporary fencing of an adjacent area to prevent vehicular access; restoration of a doorway, which was in a dangerous condition, in the north chancel wall; provision of access to the site through the graveyard in conjunction with Kells Region Economic and Tourism Enterprise Limited; insertion of a door in the north west gate to prevent the public from accessing private property; detailed survey of both the priors tower and the water tower; and an inventory of the carved stone on the site.

Expenditure on Kells Priory in the period 1997 to the end of February 2002, was €52,164. It is planned, as part of the National Development Plan 2000-2006 to carry out a further phase of conservation works subject to the provision of a suitable base there and the transfer of the workforce from projects in Waterford City.
