Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sexual Offences.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

581 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of cases of serious sexual assault in the areas covered by the Bridewell, Store Street and Fitzgibbon Street Garda stations in 2001 and to date in 2002. [8387/02]

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

596 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if there has been a recent rise in serious sexual assaults in Dublin's north city centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8712/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 581 and 596 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics are not available for the three stations cited by the Deputy. This is because Garda statistics are compiled on a divisonal and district basis. The following table, however, details the incidence of serious sexual assault offences recorded in the year 2000 in the north central division, which consists of the Bridewell, Store Street, Fitzgibbon Street and Mountjoy Garda stations.

As statistics for the year 2001 and the current year have yet to be published, it is not possible for me to comment on more recent developments.
