Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Children Act, 2001.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

624 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the sections of the Children Act, 2001, currently in force; and when the remaining sections of the Act will be brought into force. [9142/02]

The Children Act, 2001, is major legislation which it is intended to implement on a phased basis. In that context, I am at present preparing a commencement order which I intend will bring certain provisions of the Act into operation within the next month or so.

Section 2 of the Act provides that some sections and parts will come into operation under orders made by the Ministers for Health and Children and Education and Science. I understand that both Ministers plan to bring provisions relevant to their areas of responsibility into operation before too long.

The National Children's Office has been assigned the lead role in relation to co-ordinating the implementation of the Children Act by the Cabinet Committee on Children. The committee agreed that the office should prepare an action plan to implement the Act. Implementation proposals will be submitted to the Cabinet committee shortly.
