Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tourism Industry.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

650 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if separate lottery funding is available for community facilities which have a tourism potential; and if so, the details of same. [8589/02]

Funding from the national lottery available through my Department is specifically earmarked for the sports capital programme, including the development of community facilities for sport-recreational activities.

However, as the Deputy may be aware, Bord Fáilte's tourism product development scheme, which I launched on 29 January 2002, has as its objective the development of the tourist product in a sustainable way that widens the spatial spread of tourism, eases pressure from highly-developed areas and increases the lesser-developed regions' share of overseas tourism revenue. The scheme, which is funded under the local enterprise priority of the two regional operational programmes, makes provision for public sector investment of €130 million over the next five years including €55 million from the European Regional Development Fund.
Full details are available from the relevant regional tourism authority or Shannon Development in its region or on the Bord Fáilte website, www.bftrade.travel.ie
