Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

756 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science notwithstanding his glowing tributes of his Department's performance since 1997, set out in his replies to Parliamentary Question No. 234 of 20 February 2002 and Parliamentary Question No. 187 of 28 February 2002, if he will indicate to what extent Clochar Coca Naofa national school, Kilcock, County Kildare has benefited from the performance of his Department since 1997; if he will indicate whether he is aware of the needs of the school as set out under separate cover; if he expects he can respond positively to the school's requirements in 2002; if he will authorise emergency action to facilitate improvements to bring the school up to the necessary current standard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8701/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

A proposed building project for Clochar Coca Naofa national school will proceed to architectural planning, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.
