Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - University Entry Requirements.

John Perry

Ceist:

819 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) who is an Irish student graduating from the US will gain entry to the undergraduates course in Trinity College or UCD, namely, law, medicine and business; if his attention has been drawn to a case (details supplied); the steps that should be taken to ensure that this person is allowed entry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8981/02]

The admission of students to a university is a matter for the university concerned. I understand from inquiries made by the Higher Education Authority that in the case of University College Dublin, the minimum entry requirement for applicants from the USA is a scholastic aptitude test score of 1,000 combined with a grade point average of 3.0 in a school leaving or third level examination. In the case of Trinity College Dublin applicants from the USA are required to have a minimum SAT score of 1,300. Both universities may also consider applicants with other qualifications from the US such as the advanced placement examination or the American college testing programme, subject to a minimum standard being achieved in those qualifications. These are the minimum requirements for entry to the universities concerned and higher levels of attainment may be required depending on the specific programme applied for.
