Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

838 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education and Science if urgent health and safety improvement works will be sanctioned at a school (details supplied) in County Cork. [9023/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

A building project for the school to which the Deputy refers is part of the Government's programme and architectural planning is nearing completion. The project will continue to the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

839 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Education and Science when funding will be provided for the proposed extension and refurbishment of Saint Joseph's secondary school, Ballybunion, County Kerry. [9024/02]

The building requirements of the school in question are currently being assessed in light of the overall educational requirements and the existing educational provision. When this assessment has been completed the future strategy to address the infrastructural needs of the school will be determined and the school authority will be notified.
