Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Inservice Training.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

840 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science if he recognises the contribution made by special needs assistants in primary schools; if, in accepting their contribution as being valued for the education of the children with whom they work, he will make arrangements that these special needs assistants are entitled to attend at special training days for teachers in the primary schools in which they serve for the overall benefit of the children; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9065/02]

I fully recognise the contribution of special needs assistants in addressing special care needs in primary schools and I am committed to augmenting the considerable provision I have already made. In regard to training, my Department is currently in consultation with a number of third level institutions and with the education centre network in regard to the development of a comprehensive provision in this area. In addition, a number of courses have already been provided, some of which involved joint attendance with teachers where circumstances allowed. The Deputy will appreciate, however, that, as a general position, this will not always be possible.

Question No. 841 answered with Question No. 714.
