Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

879 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the provision of the extra facilities required at Sallins national school, Sallins, County Kildare; the proposed schedule of facilities; the time scale involved; the remaining stages to be gone through prior to actual implementation including commissioning day; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9280/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity. Sallins national school is being extended-refurbished as part of the Government's programme and is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.

882 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress to date regarding the provision of likely permanent facilities for Gaelscoil Nás na Riogh, County Kildare; the discussions his Department have had with local interests on the issue to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9283/02]

An application for recognition as a national school has been received in respect of Gaelscoil Nás na Riogh, which it is proposed will open in September next. The application is currently under consideration in my Department's planning section and the promoters will be advised of the outcome in due course.

In most cases, schools must undergo a period of provisional recognition, during which the operation of the school and the growth of pupil numbers are monitored. During that period, it is the responsibility of the school patron to provide interim accommodation. This accommodation must be capable of fully meeting the needs of the developing school until permanent recognition has been secured and the Department is in a position to acquire a site and provide a permanent school building.
