Vol. 550 No. 4
106 Mr. Hogan asked the Taoiseach the changing pattern of economic growth, jobs created and level of unemployment in each region since June 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8944/02]
The following tables set out the regional data on gross value added in current terms for the years 1997 to 1999 and the regional levels of employment and unemployment for the years from 1997 to 2001, together with the corresponding annual percentage changes.
Corresponding statistics on the number of jobs created are not available; the annual change in the number of persons in employment reflects the net balance between jobs created and jobs lost. The tables on GVA show GVA at current basic prices and GVA per person at current basic prices in each of the regions. The annual percentage changes include the effects of price changes. GVA measures the value of goods and services, or part thereof, which are produced within a region. The GVA shown is measured at basic prices which means that product taxes are excluded while product subsidies are included.
GVA is not a measure of household income. It differs from household income in three main respects. First, GVA includes profits of companies and company profits which accrue to non-residents are considerable. Second, the workforce which produces the GVA in a region may not live there and may bring their incomes home to a neighbouring region. Third, personal income includes items such as social welfare benefits and factor income from abroad which are not included in GVA.
Details of household incomes are available in the CSO release, "County Incomes and Regional GDP 1999", which was published in January of this year.
