Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

117 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if funding will be provided by his Department in 2002 to carry out extension and improvements to Dunmanus Pier, Golden, County Cork. [9996/02]

Dunmanus Pier is owned by Cork County Council and responsibility for its maintenance and development rests with the local authority in the first instance. Cork County Council has made an application to my Department for funding towards a preliminary report to determine the nature and the costs of the works required at the pier. The application is being considered in the context of the funding available for fishery harbour works under the National Development Plan 2000-2006 and overall national priorities.

Schull Pier is owned by Cork County Council and responsibility for its maintenance and development rests with the local authority in the first instance. In 2001 I allocated €171,414.64, £135,000, towards pier wave wall repairs at Schull Pier costing a total of €228,552.85, £180,000.

Cork County Council has not to date submitted a proposal to my Department for funding for a proposed extension and improvement works at Schull Pier. Any proposal received from the local authority will be considered in the context of the funding available for fishery harbour development works under the National Development Plan 2000-2006 and overall national priorities.

120 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if funding will be provided by his Department in 2002 to carry out the proposed extension and improvements to Baltimore Pier, County Cork. [9999/02]

As the Deputy may be aware Baltimore and Skibbereen Harbour Commissioners have lodged an application for grant aid under the seaports disengagement sub-measure of the Southern and Eastern Regional Operational Programme of the national development plan for a new breakwater and harbour enhancement projects, which includes a pier extension, at Baltimore Harbour.

All applications received by my Department under the seaports measure have been assessed and evaluated by an independent evaluator.

In order to maximise the return on investment under the programme, I am currently considering each of the projects in the context of,inter alia, their relative contribution to the achievements of the objectives of the NDP compared to other applications received and the availability of fund ing in 2002 and beyond. I hope to be in a position to announce grant allocations in the near future.
