Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

132 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the degree to which he or his Department have monitored fish stocks in Irish fishing waters; if conclusions have been drawn from such examinations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10302/02]

The Marine Institute and inter national scientific bodies carry out annual assessments of EU fish stocks. On the basis of the most recent advice, there is a serious concern that many stocks appear to be outside biological limits. There is particular concern about a number of key whitefish stocks, such as cod and hake. The European Commission, with the support of Ireland, has put in place emergency stock recovery plans for Irish Sea cod, northern hake and cod on the north west coast. It is too early to evaluate the results of these initiatives. Recent Commission proposals for a long-term recovery plan for the stocks are being examined. The stock assessment book, published by the Marine Institute, outlines the current status of the fish stocks of interest to Ireland. I have arranged for it to be forwarded to the Deputy.

Ceist:

133 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has taken steps to protect fish stocks in areas from over-fishing from EU or non-EU based fishermen; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10303/02]

Compliance with conservation rules by all fishing vessels remains a priority of mine and, to this end, fisheries protection patrols are carried out by the Naval Service and the Air Corps. In addition, the sea fisheries control division of my Department carries out port based controls on landings into Ireland. I continue to press at EU level for the effective enforcement of fisheries regulations in an even-handed manner by all member states. The viability of the resource and the interests of fishermen depend on the compliance with the rules of all vessels fishing in EU waters irrespective of origin.
