Ceist:

158 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the average State subvention per passenger provided to the CIE group of companies for the years 1998 to 2001; and the projected figure for 2002. [9838/02]

The allocation of the Exchequer subvention to the individual subsidiary companies is a matter for the CIE board. The following tables set out the information supplied by CIE in response to the Deputy's request:

The amount of subvention allocated to the CIE group in respect of 2002 is €233 million and, I understand that €157 million will be allocated to Iarnród Éireann, €55 million to Bus Átha Cliath and €21 million to Bus Éireann.
It is not possible at this early stage to accurately estimate the number of passengers to be carried by the companies in 2002.
