Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Appeals.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

372 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when an appeal for a carer's allowance will be heard for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo; and if the appeal can be heard as quickly as possible. [9685/02]

The person's application for carer's allowance was disallowed by a deciding officer on the grounds that the care recipient was not regarded as being in need of full-time care and attention. The person concerned appealed this decision to the social welfare appeals office. Additional medical evidence supplied in connection with the appeal is being considered prior to submission of the case to an appeals officer for consideration. Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.

Ceist:

373 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when an appeal for carer's allowance will be heard and finalised for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo. [9711/02]

The person's application for carer's allowance was disallowed by a deciding officer on the grounds that the care recipients, his mother and his aunt, were not regarded as being in need of full-time care and attention. The person concerned appealed against this decision to the social welfare appeals office, and the appeal will be dealt with shortly, when all of the necessary evidence is available to the appeals officer.

Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.
