438 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to a series of disturbances and incidents on the streets of Castlebar, County Mayo which required action by the Garda; the number of such incidents reported and acted upon; the numbers of gardaí deployed in dealing with these incidents; the number of arrests made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by the Garda authorities that, in relation to Castlebar, County Mayo, 103 public order incidents were reported for the period 1 December 2001, to 22 March 2002, inclusive, and that 69 arrests were made in respect of associated offences. I understand that a further 29 of these incidents are being dealt with by way of summons and that the remaining five incidents continue to be under investigation. I am also informed that 19 breaches of the Castlebar by-laws, drinking in public places were detected and recorded for the same period and that all of these breaches are being dealt with by way of summons. I am further informed that 24 assaults were reported for the same period. Seven arrests were made in respect of these assaults, and the remaining 17 offences are being dealt with by way of summons. I am also informed by the Garda authorities that, as at 26 March, 2002, the number of Garda personnel, all ranks, at Castlebar Garda station was 58.
