Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Tom Hayes

Ceist:

502 Mr. T. Hayes asked the Minister for Education and Science the procedures which exist for the suspension of a principal of a secondary school and the re-instatement of a suspended principal; and if his Department has any direct or indirect part to play in such a matter. [9848/02]

The suspension of a teacher employed by a voluntary secondary school is a matter, in the first instance, for the authorities of the school concerned. Where the authorities of a voluntary secondary school decide to suspend a teacher, they generally do so on the basis of suspension with pay. If the teacher concerned is on the approved staff of the school and included on my Department's second level teachers payroll, the school authorities must seek the formal approval of my Department for such an arrangement. All such applications which have been received to date have been approved by my Department.
