Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

565 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in view of recent court rulings, he will provide continuing educational support to persons (details supplied) in County Cork beyond their 18th birthday. [10238/02]

I understand the pupils in question, who are attending a special school in Cork, are currently approaching their 16th birthday. These pupils are entitled to continue to avail of their special school placement until the end of the school year in which they reach their 18th birthday. I fully recognise the importance of ensuring that appropriate support services continue to be available for persons with special needs beyond their 18th year. My proposals to address this important issue are contained in the Education for Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2002.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

566 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will respond to correspondence (details supplied) submitted to him some time ago; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10240/02]

The child referred to by the Deputy is currently in receipt of ten hours per week home tuition support. My Department is currently investigating a suitable educational placement for the child. My officials will be in contact with the family in question shortly in this matter.
