Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Naval Museum.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

120 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Defence the progress regarding the establishment of a naval museum at Haulbowline, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11816/02]

A meeting was held in the Department of Defence on 21 June 2001 on the subject of a proposed naval museum. Those in attendance included representatives of the Naval Association and the Defence Forces. All parties indicated a willingness to make progress in acknowledging the invaluable role played by both ex-members and current members of the Naval Service. It was agreed that all parties would be kept informed of developments and the Department of Defence will act as a facilitator in this regard, as necessary.

At that meeting it was agreed that the naval service would set up an internal committee to examine this issue and the naval museum committee has since been established. I have recently been informed by the flag officer commanding the Naval Service that a suitable building has been identified to house the museum.

Question No. 121 answered with Question No. 32.
