Vol. 552 No. 1

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of topics under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different issues. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to the Ceann Comhairle's office. I call Deputy Rabbitte.

In accordance with the terms of Standing Order 31, I wish to give notice of my intention on the Order of Business today to seek to move the adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent attention, namely, the publication of the report of the Motor Insurance Advisory Board after three years of inaction by the Government and the urgent need for the Government to spell out its reaction to the recommendations in the report, having regard to the crippling costs facing young motorists seeking motor insurance.

Having considered the matter fully, the Ceann Comhairle does not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31.

The Ceann Comhairle must not be in need of insurance.

The matter, as the Deputy is well aware, has been selected for the Adjournment tonight. In regard to the second topic, I have received notice from Deputy Joe Higgins and I call on him to state the matter.

(Dublin West): Under Standing Order 31, I am seeking the adjournment of the Dáil to debate the following issue of crucial public importance, namely, the numerous tragic deaths in violent incidents in recent weeks in this State and the utter failure by the Government to analyse the cause of this phenomenon in order to ensure the development of a society where people and communities can live harmoniously without fear of violence or serious anti-social activities.

Having considered the matter fully, the Ceann Comhairle does not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31.
