Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Health Insurance.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

345 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the VHI have discontinued benefit in respect of surgical gloves for an amputee with an artificial arm; and if, in view of the necessity of cosmetic gloves, his Department will provide assistance for people with artificial arms. [11511/02]

I have had inquiries made of the VHI in relation to this matter and am pleased to inform the Deputy that benefit has been allowed by VHI in respect of surgical gloves for the person concerned. VHI has written to that person informing him that benefit will continue to be available in future years towards the expenses incurred. VHI has also advised that a review of its policy in relation to coverage for surgical gloves is in train.

Since the current Government came into office, additional funding of over €175 million has been provided for the maintenance and development of health related services for people with physical and sensory disabilities. This includes funding of €29.617 million for aids and appliances. A further €6.35 million is being provided in the current year. This level of funding emphasises the Government's ongoing commitment to the development of health related services for people with physical and sensory disabilities.
