I propose to take Questions Nos. 471 and 473 together.

Fees are paid by my Department to medical certifiers for the provision of medical certificates and reports in respect of customers claiming illness payments. The fee payable for each certificate during the period referred to by the Deputy was £4, €5.08, until 30 June 2001 and £5, €6.35, from 1 July 2001. The fee payable for reports was £20, €25.39, until 30 June 2001 and £25, €31.74, from 1 January 2001. During 2001, a total of 2,117,773 certificates and 50,573 reports were submitted by some 2,270 medical certifiers in respect of disability and invalidity claims for which payment of £9,491,772, €12,052,064, was made to the certifiers. In 2002, to date 585,856 certificates and 15,348 reports have been submitted by 2,103 certifiers, for which payment of €4,207,331 has been made. The average payment to each individual certifier in 2001 was £4,181, €5,309, and in 2002 to date is €2,000. Details of payments to individual certifiers are not readily available and it is not possible to provide this information at short notice.
