Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

497 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the position regarding the Calladh Mór on Inish Meáin, Aran Islands; if permission has been given to Galway County Council to apply for a section 10 and an offshore licence; and if it has also been agreed that this request would go hand in hand with the decision to proceed to ask consultants (details supplied) to carry out a wave analysis study at Cora Point, Inish Meáin, Aran Islands. [11015/02]

At the request of my Department, Galway County Council appointed the consultants referred to by the Deputy to prepare a preliminary report on the development of Caladh Mór pier on Inis Meáin. The report has been received by my Department and the case for the development of the pier is being evaluated in the context of funding available to me for island development and other matters. As part of this evaluation process, my Department requested the consultants to provide a fee proposal for a wave analysis study on the implications for the use of the other pier on the island at Cora Point if rock armour was constructed at that facility. The fee proposal has been received from the consultants and is being examined by my officials. Following a full evaluation of both proposals, a decision on the pier facilities will be made.
