Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Third Level Admissions Policies.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

713 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress to date on the case of a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny regarding their application to Trinity College to study physiotherapy as a mature student. [11398/02]

The admission of individual students to a university is a matter for the individual university concerned. Furthermore, I understand from enquiries made by the Higher Education Authority that Trinity College Dublin is not in a position to release personal information concerning an individual's application to a third party. However, the university would be prepared to release all relevant information on file to the applicant concerned. I further understand that Trinity College Dublin did operate a mature student aptitude test in February 2002 as part of its selection procedures. This test was administered in three venues. However, its administration was seriously disrupted in two of these venues, following the tragic death of a candidate in one venue and the persistent refusal of a small number of candidates to adhere to the invigilator's instructions in another venue. Accordingly, Trinity College decided to render the results of all candidates tested null and void and it assessed applications without reference to the aptitude test results and shortlisted candidates for interview on the basis of the information contained in their application forms.
