Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

781 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the funds allocated to build the new Coláiste Cionn Torc at Castlepollard, County Westmeath; if this project has been approved to go to tender; if so, the date of this approval; the projected timeframe for works to commence with this project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11711/02]

The allocation for post-primary buildings in 2002 is in excess of €182 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in post-primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Due to the greatly increased level of investment in the post-primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

In relation to building the new Coláiste Cionn Torc at Castlepollard, County Westmeath, my Department has written to County Westmeath VEC on 15 April 2002 giving approval to proceed to tender i.e. stage 6 of design team procedures. Details of the level of funding required for this project, along with the projected timeframe for the commencement of construction work will be available at the conclusion of the tender process.

Seán Power

Ceist:

782 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress which has been made in relation to the application by Scoil an Linbh Iosa, Prosperous, Naas, County Kildare, for a building project at the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11712/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the pre vious Government's investment in 1997. Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

Scoil an Linbh Iosa is being extended-refurbished as part of the Government's programme and is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

783 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department has received an application for a gym and extra classrooms for the Model School, O'Connell Avenue, Limerick; if so, the stage the application is at; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11727/02]
