Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Gerry Reynolds

Ceist:

801 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will provide the necessary funding for the refurbishment of the Ursuline College, Sligo, in 2002; and if not, the reasons therefor. [11869/02]

The allocation for post-primary buildings in 2002 is €182.31 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in post-primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Because of the greatly increased level of investment in the post primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

The revised stage 4 submission – detail design – for the extension at the school to which the Deputy refers is currently being examined by my Department's technical staff. When this submission is found to be satisfactory, the school will be authorised to proceed as soon as possible under the expanded building programme to the next stage of architectural planning, stage 5 – bill of quantities.

Question No. 802 answered with Question No. 613.

Ceist:

803 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 860 of 20 March 2002, the college can rent alternative premises to facilitate the demolition of the pre-fab classrooms; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11871/02]

I have been informed that my Department has not received any application from the management authority of the school in question regarding the rental of alternative premises to facilitate the demolition of the pre-fab classrooms.

Question No. 804 answered with Question No. 642.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

805 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number and location of second level schools in north Kildare which are currently undergoing refurbishment and or replacement or extension of facilities; when the works involved are expected to be concluded; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11873/02]

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

806 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number and location of second level schools in north Kildare in respect of which it is anticipated works in respect of replacement, refurbishment or extension of facilities are likely to begin before the end of 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11874/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 805 and 806 together.

The information as requested by the Deputy is not readily available. However, if the Deputy has a query in relation to a particular post-primary school in the north Kildare area, I will be pleased to provide the necessary information.
