Vol. 552 No. 2

Written Answers. - Signage Charges.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

106 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the consideration which has been given to the likely negative impact on the tourism industry arising from dramatically increased charges in respect of signage; the likely amount of revenue being generated through this procedure; the way in which this action is likely to be of benefit to the tourism industry currently attempting to recover; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12252/02]

Fees for the licensing of directional signs for tourist accommodation have been reviewed. A draft regulation was laid before both Houses of the Oireachtas on 16 April 2002 which provides that an annual licence fee of €50 will be charged for placing directional signs for tourist accommodation on a public road. The affirmative resolution of both Houses of the Oireachtas is now being sought to allow the regulation to come into force.
