Vol. 552 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Seán Power

Ceist:

147 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding an application for a building project by St. Paul's Secondary School, Monasterevin, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12194/02]

My Department's building unit has agreed in principle to grant aid the provision of new accommodation to replace the existing St. Paul's Secondary School, Monasterevin, County Kildare. The planning section of my Department has advised the post-primary building unit that the new school should cater for a long-term enrolment figure of 375 pupils.

The management authority of St. Paul's secondary school has identified a number of potential sites for the new school. A senior architect from the building unit has inspected the sites and a decision regarding the purchase of the most suitable site that represents value for money will be made as soon as possible.

150 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction funding for the necessary extension of Huntstown Primary School, Scoil Chroí Ró-Naofa Íosa. [12213/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

Huntstown Primary School is being extended-refurbished as part of the Government's programme and is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the Government's expanded building programme.
