Vol. 552 No. 2

Other Questions. - Beef Industry Irregularities.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

7 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the investigation conducted by his Department following the discovery of one tonne of dioxin-contaminated cattle compound; if the source of the material has been established; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11891/02]

In the course of routine sampling and analysis of animal feedingstuffs by my Department, a premixture containing trace elements and vitamins for use in the manufacture of animal feedingstuffs was found to contain dioxin above the acceptable level. One of the ingredients of the premixture, carbosan copper, was identified as the source of the dioxin. This product was manufactured in the United States and distributed by a United Kingdom agent. All the contaminated batches of the premixture are being held pending their destruction. The relevant authorities at EU level and in the United Kingdom were acquainted of the finding.

Is the Minister of State satisfied that none of the material in question got into any foodstuffs here, that the analysis was detailed and that it amounted to a pre-emptive strike?

It was a regular routine check. We are happy that these are being done at random. The check in this instance, done on 12 February, revealed this situation. Following an investigation, undertaken at the premises of the manufacturer of the premixture, one of the ingredients was discovered to be carbosan copper. We are now awaiting for the materials to be destroyed.
