Vol. 552 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospitals Building Programme.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

124 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Health and Children if a rehabilitation hospital for the Munster region will be provided, in view of the unacceptable waiting period for the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire. [12449/02]

The Deputy will appreciate that the provision of services is a matter for the Southern Health Board in the first instance. I gave approval in December 2000 for the establishment of a project team to plan and oversee a major development of facilities and services at St. Mary's Orthopaedic Hospital, Cork. One of the component services to be included in the development of the site is the provision of acute rehabilitation facilities at the hospital. I understand that the project team is close to finalising the brief for these developments. My Department has asked the chief executive officer at the board to write directly to the Deputy outlining the present position in relation to the work of the project team.
