Vol. 552 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Ceist:

217 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding refurbishment work at a school (details supplied) in Dublin 6W. [12574/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

My Department's building unit is currently examining an application for grant-aid towards general remedial works to the school referred to by the Deputy. When this examination is complete, my Department's building unit will be in contact with the school authorities.

My Department has recently approved grant aid towards improvement works to the general purpose hall at the school.

Ceist:

218 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if new windows for a school (details supplied) in Dublin 12 will be installed over the summer of 2002. [12575/02]

The school authorities of the school in Dublin 12 referred to by the Deputy have applied to my Department's post primary building unit for grant aid toward the cost of replacement windows in the school.

The question of authorising the preparation of tender documents and invitation of tenders is being considered and a decision will be conveyed to the school authorities as soon as possible.
