Vol. 553 No. 3

Written Answers. - Supplementary Estimates.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

70 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance the percentage and absolute value of sup plementary spending which he approved in 2001 over the original budget estimates under each major programme. [14101/02]

Supplementary Estimates represent departmental estimations of additional moneys required towards the end of the year to meet both known and anticipated pressures on spending.

In the normal course, some anticipated pressures will not materialise or will be offset by savings across the range of Votes. The end year expenditure outturn is often considerably lower than the total Estimates voted by the Dáil, that is original plus Supplementary Estimates. This was the position in 2001. The outturn exceeded the original Estimate by €349 million or just 1.4%. Of this total voted current spending exceeded the original current Estimate by €190 million or 0.9% and voted capital spending exceeded the original capital Estimate by €160 million or 3.4%.

The absolute value of spending, which I approved by way of Supplementary Estimate in 2001, totalled €850 million or 3.4% of the original Estimate.

Details of the Supplementary Estimates approved by the Dáil are as follows:
