Vol. 553 No. 7

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Mary Upton

Ceist:

187 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the steps he has taken to encourage members of staff in his Department to cycle to work; if his Department provides showering facilities; if his Department will supply cycle helmets to ensure safe cycling; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15256/02]

A number of steps have already been taken by my Department in an effort to encourage members of staff to cycle to work. A secure lock up area has been made available for bicycles and shower facilities have been installed for staff use.

My Department is fully committed to any scheme which makes it easier and safer for staff to commute to work. The issue of providing cycle helmets for staff who cycle to work cannot be considered by my Department in isolation. Provision of cycle helmets is a policy matter to be addressed in the context of national or Dublin traffic management policy which is not a matter for my Department.
