I do not propose to make any changes in the role or functions of the communications unit within my Department.
The unit provides a media information service to Government Ministers and their Departments. It furnishes news updates and transcripts which ensures that Departments are kept informed in a fast and efficient manner of any relevant news developments. The unit is staffed by seven civil servants, and it is conservatively estimated that in a full year it saves Departments approximately €162,000.
