Written Answers. - Livestock Movement Permits.
Permitting requirements were introduced throughout the country for the movement of cattle from farm to farm on the resumption of animal movements in 2001 after the foot and mouth disease emergency. The permit system, which replaced the post-movement notification requirements in place since September 1998, has been retained because it provides greater assurances for cattle buyers. The origin, identity and location of the cattle are verified against the central CMMS database before the cattle are permitted to move off the farm. The system also provides more prompt information about the movement of cattle which would be of vital importance should a need arise to trace animal contacts in a potential disease situation. There are no special arrangements for the movement of livestock in County Louth.
