Ceist:

1662 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs the reason persons (details supplied) in County Mayo are not receiving child benefit for their son. [15728/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 1652 and 1662 together.

A child benefit book, including arrears, issued at the end of July for collection by the person concerned at the nominated post office.

Ceist:

1653 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs if his Department will reassess a person (details supplied) in County Mayo for unemployment assistance; and the way in which their means are calculated. [15712/02]

The person concerned applied for unemployment assistance on 17 July. Her means were assessed at €111 per week, based on the benefit derived from her parent's income. Her claim was accordingly awarded at the rate of €32 per week. She appealed this decision to the social welfare appeals office and her case is being referred to an appeals officer.

Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.
