Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Appeals.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

1667 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs when a carer's allowance appeal for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be dealt with. [15796/02]

The application of the person concerned for a carer's allowance was disallowed by a deciding officer on the grounds that the care recipients, her parents, were not regarded as being in need of full-time care and attention.

The person concerned appealed this decision to the SWA office. In that context the case was referred to the chief medical adviser to consider new evidence submitted with the appeal and he advised that a medical examination of the care recipients is required in this case. The person con cerned will be notified of the date and venue for the examination when the arrangements have been made.
Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.
