Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Asbestos Management Programme.

Seán Crowe

Ceist:

402 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Finance the number of schools in the Dublin south west area which have been surveyed as part of the asbestos management programme; and if finance will be made available, in view of the health and safety concerns involved, for works to be carried out in the next 12 months on any of those schools. [15595/02]

To date, 59 schools in the Dublin south west area have been surveyed by the Office of Public Works to determine the location, type, form and condition of any asbestos material present and the steps necessary to manage the material safely.

Works necessary to deal with the problem are carried out on a priority basis. In all cases so far identified, works have been completed, are in hand or are in the process of being commissioned.

The remaining 20 or so schools in the area will be surveyed over the coming month as part of the national programme. The allocation of funds and the scheduling of future works will depend on the outcome of these surveys.
