I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that an assessment for the 2001 tax year was sent to the taxpayer on 14 August 2002. The assessment, which showed that the taxpayer had a tax liability of €1,066.07, £839.60, was based on the information provided by the taxpayer on his return of income. Following the issue of the assessment, the taxpayer advised the inspector of taxes that his income had been overstated on his return. On the basis of additional information provided by the taxpayer, the inspector revised the taxpayer's liability to €135.34, £106.59, for the 2001 tax year.
As regards the previous tax year 2000-01 the position is that the taxpayer was not liable to pay tax on his income for that year because it was below the exemption limit. His income in 2001 was above the exemption limit. Therefore, he is liable to tax on his 2001 income.
