Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

520 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science the position of the State regarding the provision of education to the intellectually disabled over 18 years of age; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15506/02]

Overall responsibility for the delivery of support services for persons with disabilities over 18 years of age rests with the relevant health authority.

My Department funds the delivery of tuition services to persons with disabilities in the 19 to 25 year age group who attend vocational training centres operated by the health authorities.

It is my intention to bring forward new legislation to provide for the education of children and adults who have special educational needs. This legislation will build on the principles and provisions of the Education for Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2002. As part of the process of preparing this legislation, my Department is currently engaged in a consultation process with interested groups and individuals.
