Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

818 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the funding which has been made available for the feasibility study taking place for the integrated development of Westport harbour in County Mayo; if the study has taken place; the cost in this regard; the consultants in this regard; and when the report will be ready. [16358/02]

An integrated development plan for Westport harbour, prepared by Raymond Burke Consulting in association with Posford Duvivier and Brady Shipman Martin was completed in May 2001 and subsequently submitted by the local authority and Westport Harbour Commissioners to my Department. The cost of the study was €37,330. An application for development funding, including the cost of the study, under the disengagement sub-measure of the seaports measure of the national development plan has been lodged with my Department and is currently being progressed in the context of the roll out of the national development plan for seaports investment and the general availability of Exchequer funding over the NDP period.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

819 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the position regarding a proposed harbour development at Ballycotton, County Cork; if funding has been allocated for this under the marine tourism grant scheme, 2002-2006; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16528/02]

David Stanton

Ceist:

831 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the funding he intends to make available to enable the harbour at Ballycotton, County Cork, to be developed and a small marina to be constructed there; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17133/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 819 and 831 together.

The Deputy will be aware that in February this year, my predecessor launched the marine tourism sub-measure, which will be implemented by my Department as part of the two regional operational programmes of the National Develop ment Plan 2000-2006. Under this grant scheme, €25.4 million has been allocated to marine tourism, and targeted particularly at improving marine access infrastructure such as marinas, berths and slipways. The closing date for receipt of applications under the first call was 28 March 2002.
I can confirm that Cork County Council applied for funding under the scheme for a development including a marina – 18 berths – at Ballycotton, County Cork. However, as the applicants had not obtained the necessary statutory permissions, i.e. planning permission and foreshore lease, as required under the conditions for the scheme, their applications could not be considered further. The applicants were informed of this and that they could apply for funding under a future call following the receipt of the required permissions.
