Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

833.Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the funding he intends to make available to combat coastal erosion in the Youghal area of County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17135/02]

Responsibility for coastal protection rests with the property owner be that a local authority or a private individual. In May 2002 my Department provided funding of €37,500 to Cork County Council towards the preparation of planning and contract documents and foreshore lease-licence application at Youghal, on the basis that they indicated that they would only be in a position to spend that amount in the current year. The question of funding further works at Youghal in 2003 and beyond will be considered in the context of the funding available for coast protection works and overall national priorities.
