Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

862 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if he will assist and facilitate Tuam Stars GAA Club, Tuam, County Galway, in accessing funds to develop their club services. [15462/02]

The national lottery funded sports capital programme, which is administered by my Department, provides funding to voluntary sporting and community organisations at local, regional and national level throughout the country towards the provision of sport and recreational facilities. The programme is advertised on an annual basis. The closing date for the receipt of completed applications under the 2002 programme was 4 January last and provisional grant allocations under the programme were announced on 29 March. All funding under the 2002 programme has been completed.

While Tuam Stars did not apply for funding under the 2002 programme, it will be open to the club to apply under the 2003 programme when it is advertised. Guidelines, terms and conditions for the programme will be issued with the application forms. I would also like to point out, for the information of the Deputy, that the club was allocated a grant of €31,743 under the 1998 sports capital programme.

Ceist:

864 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the amount of public money which was spent on youth sports clubs over the past five years. [15561/02]

The national lottery funded sports capital programme, which is administered by my Department, provides funding to voluntary sporting and community organisations at local, regional and national level throughout the country towards the provision of sport and recreational facilities. The programme is advertised on an annual basis. While it is not possible to say how much of the funding allocated under this programme was exclusively for the benefit of youth sport clubs as specified by the Deputy, the majority of the clubs and organisations funded under this programme are engaged in providing for youth sport. In the past five years, a total of over €213 million has been allocated to sports capital projects, broken down as follows:
