Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Projects.

David Stanton

Ceist:

876 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the number of applications for funding for the provision of new swimming pools being considered by his Department; the location of each; the status of each such application; the amount of funding required in each case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17148/02]

Under the local authority swimming pool programme 2000-2002, which is administered by my Department, there are four stages in a swimming pool project following the submission of a feasibility study. These, in order of progress, are preliminary report; contract docu ments; tender; and construction. My Department's technical advisers, the Office of Public Works, evaluate each stage and local authorities cannot proceed to the next stage of a project unless prior approval issues from my Department. Grant aid is allocated only when tenders have been received for the project and will be capped at the time of allocation.

Under the swimming pool programme, grants of up to €3,809,214, IR£3 million, are available towards both the refurbishment of existing pools and the provision of new pools, subject in both cases to the total grant not exceeding 80% of the eligible cost of the project or, in the case of projects located in designated disadvantaged areas, 90% of the eligible cost. Support is available towards the cost of the swimming pool, toddler pool, sauna and steam room. The final cost of projects cannot be determined until the projects reach tender stage. The funding available for the current swimming pool programme amounts to €57.15 million over the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. There are 45 applications on hand in the current swimming pool programme and these are at various stages of progress. Of these 45 proposals, 14 are for refurbishments and the remaining 31 could be classified as new; 13 are brand new and 18 are replacements of old pools. The proposals for the 31 new or replacement pools and the current status of each are as follows:

877 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the position with regard to the application for grant aid to provide a public swimming facility in Youghal, County Cork; the amount of funding required from his Department to allow this facility to proceed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17149/02]

Grant aid is allocated only when tenders have been received for the project and will be capped at the time of allocation. The preliminary report for Youghal swimming pool was approved in July 2001. The Department is currently waiting for Youghal Town Council to submit contract documents in respect of this project. The proposal can only be considered further on receipt of this documentation.

Under the swimming pool programme, grants of up to €3,809,214 are available towards both the refurbishment of existing pools and the provision of new pools, subject in both cases to the total grant not exceeding 80% of the eligible cost of the project or, in the case of projects located in designated disadvantaged areas, 90% of the eligible cost.
