Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Port Development.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

129 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if he has received the final report of the task force on transport logistics in regard to reducing container traffic from Dublin Port through the city centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17061/02]

The task force report on transport logistics in connection with ports was published on 29 April 2002.

In relation to the reduction of container traffic from Dublin Port, my predecessor requested Dublin Port Company to commission an independent study on the issue. In particular, the consultants would examine the feasibility of locating a container/storage facility for Dublin Port traffic on the periphery close to the M50, connected to the port preferably by rail with an operational capacity to work off schedule.

I am advised by Dublin Port Company that the tender process for the selection of consultants is now complete. Consultants have been appointed and the study is expected to commence shortly. I have arranged for a copy of the report on transport logistics in connection with ports to be forwarded to the Deputy.
