Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - General Medical Services Scheme.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

938 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that some general practitioners in the Dublin area are now operating, in effect, a two tier system for medical card holders over 70 years and discriminating between those who got a medical card due to the last Government's initiative and those who qualified for a card on income grounds. [15566/02]

I have not been made aware of any doctor operating any form of two tier system for medical card holders over 70. However, any attempt to operate such a system would be at variance with the principles and spirit of the GMS scheme. If the Deputy has any information which suggests that such practices are taking place, I would be obliged if he would forward details to me and I will immediately have a thorough investigation carried out.
