Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hospital Funding.

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

940 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding the ?2 million he promised for the orthopaedic hospital in Clontarf before the general election; and his views on whether this ?2 million extension project might now fail to happen. [15583/02]

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

1020 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Incorporated Orthopaedic Hospital, Clontarf, Dublin 3, could save the State ?19 million per year, if he granted the finance to fund the planned extension to the hospital; and if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that this would free up approximately 2,000 patients per year from the waiting lists in the acute hospitals. [15897/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 940 and 1020 together.

As the Deputy is aware services at the Incorporated Orthopaedic Hospital, Clontarf are provided under an arrangement with the Eastern Regional Health Authority.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department has recently given approval to the authority to proceed with design team selection for the second phase of the development of the hospital. The Deputy may rest assured I am fully committed to progressing this scheme.
