Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

1230 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Transport if he will investigate a constructive proposal to save children's lives by bringing up safety measures, such as requesting that all traffic stops when children are getting off school buses; and his views on whether this measure is successful in the USA. [15472/02]

This area previously came under the remit of the Minister for the Environment and Local Government and he issued a public consultation document earlier this year entitled Safer School Buses: A Discussion Document, a copy of which is available in the Oireachtas Library. The objective of the document was to facilitate public consultation on the road safety aspects of the school bus transport system. Comments were sought from the public on a wide range of possible measures concerning the safety of children travelling on school buses. The responses are being analysed with a view to drawing up a comprehensive set of proposals for my consideration. Among the options possible is the introduction of a standard livery for school buses, which would include the use of flashing lights to control the flow of traffic around the vehicle while the children are embarking upon or disembarking from it.
