Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Airport Safety.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

1255 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport if he has satisfied himself with the adequacy of security at Aer Rianta controlled airports; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16672/02]

I am generally satisfied with the security arrangements at the State airports.

The security standards for civil aviation in Europe have been agreed informally on an intergovernmental basis for some time and are being formalised in European Union legislation which is in the process of adoption. It is not the practice on security grounds to disclose the nature of specific aviation security measures that are in place or that may be implemented in particular circumstances.

In addition to Aer Rianta, there are a range of different organisations and agencies responsible for aspects of security at the State airports. The compliance by relevant agencies at the State airports with the recommended standards for aviation security is monitored and reviewed on an ongoing basis by the National Civil Aviation Security Committee which is chaired by my Department. Any lapses in or breaches of security at the airports are reported to that committee, which seeks to ensure that any such lapses are not repeated.
