Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

1290 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport the meetings or briefings he has had concerning the possible reopening of the rail link to Midleton, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16707/02]

Following proposals put forward in the Cork area strategic plan, Iarnród Éireann is currently undertaking an in-depth feasibility study into the prospects for the development of commuter rail services from Cork to Blarney and Midleton and the opening of a number of stations at appropriate locations.

I have been fully briefed by my officials in relation to the proposals and the study. During my visit to Cork last Friday I took the opportunity to discuss the proposals with members of the Cork Chamber of Commerce and officials and members of Cork City and County Councils. I understand that the study is due to be completed over the coming weeks.
