Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Public Transport.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

1295 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport the provision he has made to support the development of quality bus corridors or green transport routes outside of Dublin city; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16712/02]

My Department has been supporting the development of quality bus corridors or green transport routes in the main cities outside of Dublin through the provision of very significant investment, under the national development plan, in new buses in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford by Bus Éireann in recent years and its representation on the steering committees for land use and transportation studies which are at various stages of completion in Galway, Limerick and Waterford. All these studies deal with the issue of providing bus priority measures.

Preliminary studies on two green routes in Cork have already been commissioned by Cork City Council and my Department is currently examining a request for funding from the council for the implementation of these green routes.

I understand also that the Minister for the Environment and Local Government has also introduced a scheme of regional traffic management grants for non-national roads.
